A Beginner's Guide to the Stock Market

by Andrew Edgington - A Private Investor

Introduction

First things first: while it's always possible to lose money investing in the stock market, provided you exercise a little common sense, the risk is nowhere near as great as the uninitiated may have been led to believe. You may be familiar with lurid headlines of the ilk of "Umpteen billion pounds wiped off the value of the stock market today.", but, over the longer term, the good days have always outweighed the bad. To a certain extent it is in the professionals' interest to maintain the myth that investing is difficult and risky because they make their money from offering you advice or managing your funds for you, but, if the professionals are so good, why haven't they made their fortunes and retired ? In my experience, you can do better by making your own decisions as, the fact is, that most fund managers rarely beat the performance of the index from which they pick their shares.

However, if this guide fails to convince you of the value of dabbling in the stock market, there is always the government-backed National Savings and Investments range (www.nsandi.com).
